Break Away

Toyota Matrix “Break Away” was completed in July, 2004 for Saatchi & Saatchi, Toronto. These were test renders produced during the pre-production stage of the second Toyota Matrix commercial which can be found in the links below.

Mickey Mouse

A sweet production demo for Disney of Mickey Mouse in 3D. Mickey was rendered with a toon shader out of 3dsmax. In addition, Mickey’s ears traditionally always point towards camera – they never actually change perspective which rather complicates things in 3D. As a result, we made the ears a separate object and applied a […]

Topography

Lexus “Topographical” was produced to introduce Lexus’ new GX SUV model. The creative idea was to replace the environment with a computer generated topographical elevation map. The live action was shot in the desert mountains near Los Angeles using a helicopter. Lexus “Topographical” was created by first tracking the live action footage using Boujou. The […]

Dog

This was a shot we had to produce which involved a jug of Bayer Bronate Herbicide shaking off mud like a dog shakes off water. It was actually quite complex for many reasons. First of all, the RealFlow (which was used for the fluid dynamics) derives it’s motion blur based on vertex velocity whereas VRay […]

Totalphone

“Totalphone” was a unique commercial which introduced three cells coming together to form a ‘new species of wireless’ – a new mobile phone rate/plan from Rogers AT&T. The challenge was to create fun and interesting cells while making sure they did not look unpleasant or disturbing. We accomplished this through the use of bright colors […]

Robaxacet was completed approximately one month ago and is currently playing in Canada. This is the first of a series of spots featuring the familiar Robaxacet puppets in a new advertising campaign – the full integration of the CG puppets into live action sets. It was directed by myself and Andy Knight and produced by Randi Yaffa. The concept initially began as a pitch for a grant from Bravo!Fact and, after a storyboard and animatic […]

Buddha

This is one of the earliest 3D scans from the Computer Graphics Laboratory 3D Scanning Repository at Stanford University. It has been widely used in the 3D industry for rendering engine tests due to it’s high polygon count. The original comes in the University’s .PLY format and contains 543,652 vertices and 1,087,716 triangles. However, after […]

This spot was just recently completed for Young and Rubicam Advertising in Toronto, Canada. It involved a print ad for magazines and two 15 second animated sequences intended to introduce Whitehall-Robin’s new Extra Strength Advil product. The concept was to show an unidentified box/surface impervious to even the toughest of forces, which is then […]

Mouse

This was a fairly straight forward modeling, lighting and rendering project to present four simple yet elegant renders of Logitech’s optical wheel mouse. The lighting setup was somewhat challenging in order to achieve a crisp image with full tonal range, none of which is blown out or underexposed. The translucency of the red plastic was […]

Cheese Flood

This was a short, in-studio test developed over the span of only two days. The premise was to recreate obstacles in 3D from a photograph, so as to have Realflow fluids interact realistically with them. The 3D objects also provided a basis from which to derive shadows, ambient occlusion and much more. Obviously, we couldn’t […]

Frootloops Piranha

This spot was a 10 second tag, just recently completed for Leo Burnett, featuring a new variation of the Froot Loops family of cereals. Textures were scanned off the original food product, as usual, in order to retain the physical characteristics as much as possible. Bump, specularity and opacity maps were derived off the scans […]

Shift Reality

Toyota Matrix “Shift Reality” was a spot just recently completed in under 1 month for both cinema and television broadcast. The concept was to show an animated commercial in which Toyota’s new car accelerates to such high speeds that the air resistance ‘peels’ off the animation thus revealing the live-action vehicle underneath. We then follow […]

Ben Doll

Coverna was a 60 second spot with a very short schedule which required two shots of a doll answering a phone. There was approximately 1 week of scheduled time to model the doll and phone, and one week to animate and render two three-second shots. Many dolls were purchased and used as reference to build […]

Cameroon

“Cameroon” was a combination of traditional animation, computer animation, and heavy graphic design, all carefully coordinated together to create a powerful and bold spot for Puma. The environment was first built in 3D, whereupon camera moves were planned out and then printed out as layouts for the traditional animators to work with. For scenes during […]

BubbaXtreme

BubbaXtreme was yet another spot created for Mexico. It involved both traditional and computer animation, both interacting with live action. The product, a lollipop, had to be built in 3D for a 3 second product demo featured halfway through the spot. The lollipop actually proved to be quite challenging due to the translucent nature of […]

Christmas

These two digital tests were created for Coca-Cola in order to demonstrate how we could grab one of their original Sundbloom Santa Claus paintings and bring it to life through animation. In the first test, this was achieved by first using Elastic Reality to alter Santa’s face to create a winking movement, along with other […]

Fantasy

Berol was just recently completed for Grey Advertising in Mexico, under my direction. I’m particularly pleased with how the lighting and rendering turned out for this project, although this has a lot to do with the fact that it was globally illuminated. (For more info on global illumination, see global illumination.) This is the third […]

Sopa

Not too much to say about this spot. It was for Campbell’s Mexico and required a final shot of the can’s lid popping open and the articulation of its line. It was modeled and animated using Softimage, rendered with Mental Ray.

Colorsmart

This spot involved modeling and animating a Bounce ColorSmart product box unfolding itself and then transforming into a dryer. This involved quite a bit of pre-production – more so than usual – as it was extremely important to understand how it would have to be physically constructed in order to achieve this. Each bendable piece […]

Termite

There were a total of 5 spots created for Bayer Mexico, under my direction. The advertising agency was BBDO Mexico and I had the pleasure of working with creative director Carl Jones. All of the spots called for live action integration, so there was a fair amount of shooting done for these jobs, also under […]

Clam

There were a total of 5 spots created for Bayer Mexico, under my direction. The advertising agency was BBDO Mexico and I had the pleasure of working with creative director Carl Jones. All of the spots called for live action integration, so there was a fair amount of shooting done for these jobs, also under […]

Crazybones

This spot was a 15 second add-on for another previously existing animated Capt’n Crunch spot. It was meant to promote the “Crazy Bones” toys which came in the package, so the idea was to show them in action. This was accomplished through a combination of dramatic camera angles and a rigid body dynamics simulation using […]

The Difference

This was a fairly straightforward spot consisting of a can of Rotel hopping about different dishes and converting them into tastier meals. The model was built from measurements of the real thing, so as to make sure proportions were accurate. The most challenging aspect of this commercial was trying to figure out just how far […]

Signs

Firestone was a very graphic spot featuring an arrow darting about and narrowly swerving out of the way so as not to hit obstacles, thus promoting the traction on the tires. It was all done in 3D with the exception of the deer which was traditionally animated, mapped onto geometry for tracking purposes, and then […]

Craver

The following two spots were created for Post Honeycomb cereal and involved the “Craver” character. The physical model was actually purchased from Industrial Light and Magic, since they had created the initial few commercials with an animatronic character. The character was then rebuilt in Softimage using the model for reference which, once completed, was treated […]

Splat

This was a short which was created specifically to be aired at the Ottawa Animation Festival in 1999. Since then, it has won one award and been nominated for another. (For more info see awards). The short is a promo for a show called “Splat”, which is shown on the Cartoon Network and promotes talent […]

Nutrigrain Twists

This spot required a computer generated Kellogg’s Nutrigrain bar bursting out of the package into two pieces, and then twisting together to form the product. In order to ensure that we ended up with an accurate representation of the pastry, we decided to break several apart and actually scan the texture, which we then used […]

Murphy The Rat

“Murphy The Rat” was a pitch for a television series pilot that was in production several years ago. It involved modeling, posing and animating several characters, some of which are shown below. In particular, it’s interesting to note Mental Ray’s stunning toon-tracing technology here going all the way back to 1998. Not only is the […]

Miniwheats Talk Show

This spot for Kellogg’s was pretty cool since we got the chance to model and animate Mr. Miniwheat in 3D. He was to be integrated with live action, so the shooting had to be done before the animation process began. Although the commercial was in French and required a substantial amount of lip-synching, the language […]

Ratefinder

One of the first spots I worked on as an animator, all the way back in 1997 at Topix. Created with Softimage, rendered with Mental Ray and composited with After Effects.

Seafood

This spot involved a combination of both 3D animation as well as 2D warping, using Elastic Reality. The challenge was to animate a shark talking using previously shot stock footage. This was accomplished by using the same method as that in the movie “Babe”, in which the shark face was modeled with multiple mouth positions […]
