"Fluid"
Completed February 12, 2012

A different interpretation of the traditional ink-in-water tests, this time with an emphasis on frenetic pacing and climatic visuals.

I hand-built my own glass chamber using picture frame glass and shot various tests under dark, backlit conditions. Magic Lantern firmware was used for shooting with minimal compression but artifacts still showed up in post under the extreme grading and optics applied. Unfortunately, the 5D only shoots in 8-bit color, which is heavily compressed, and this doesn’t provide much latitude for post work. Finally, I played with non-linear time-ramping using graceful ease-in and out curves to compliment the music.

This was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II using Magic Lantern firmware for minimal compression. The lens was a Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM. Post effects / color grading with After Effects and Colorista.
