Fantasy

Berol was just recently completed for Grey Advertising in Mexico, under my direction. Not too much to say about this spot. It was for Campbell’s Mexico and required a final shot of the can’s lid popping open and the articulation of its line. It was modeled and animated using Softimage, rendered with Mental Ray.

Colorsmart

This spot involved modeling and animating a Bounce ColorSmart product box unfolding itself and then transforming into a dryer. This involved quite a bit of pre-production – more so than usual – as it was extremely important to understand how it would have to be physically constructed in order to achieve this. Each bendable piece […]

Termite

There were a total of 5 spots created for Bayer Mexico, under my direction. The advertising agency was BBDO Mexico and I had the pleasure of working with creative director Carl Jones. All of the spots called for live action integration, so there was a fair amount of shooting done for these jobs, also under […]

Crazybones

This spot was a 15 second add-on for another previously existing animated Capt’n Crunch spot. It was meant to promote the “Crazy Bones” toys which came in the package, so the idea was to show them in action. This was accomplished through a combination of dramatic camera angles and a rigid body dynamics simulation using […]

The Difference

This was a fairly straightforward spot consisting of a can of Rotel hopping about different dishes and converting them into tastier meals. The model was built from measurements of the real thing, so as to make sure proportions were accurate. The most challenging aspect of this commercial was trying to figure out just how far […]

Signs

Firestone was a very graphic spot featuring an arrow darting about and narrowly swerving out of the way so as not to hit obstacles, thus promoting the traction on the tires. It was all done in 3D with the exception of the deer which was traditionally animated, mapped onto geometry for tracking purposes, and then […]

Craver

The following two spots were created for Post Honeycomb cereal and involved the “Craver” character. The physical model was actually purchased from Industrial Light and Magic, since they had created the initial few commercials with an animatronic character. The character was then rebuilt in Softimage using the model for reference which, once completed, was treated […]

Splat

This was a short which was created specifically to be aired at the Ottawa Animation Festival in 1999. Since then, it has won one award and been nominated for another. (For more info see awards). The short is a promo for a show called “Splat”, which is shown on the Cartoon Network and promotes talent […]

Nutrigrain Twists

This spot required a computer generated Kellogg’s Nutrigrain bar bursting out of the package into two pieces, and then twisting together to form the product. In order to ensure that we ended up with an accurate representation of the pastry, we decided to break several apart and actually scan the texture, which we then used […]

Murphy The Rat

“Murphy The Rat” was a pitch for a television series pilot that was in production several years ago. It involved modeling, posing and animating several characters, some of which are shown below. In particular, it’s interesting to note Mental Ray’s stunning toon-tracing technology here going all the way back to 1998. Not only is the […]

Miniwheats Talk Show

This spot for Kellogg’s was pretty cool since we got the chance to model and animate Mr. Miniwheat in 3D. He was to be integrated with live action, so the shooting had to be done before the animation process began. Although the commercial was in French and required a substantial amount of lip-synching, the language […]

Ratefinder

One of the first spots I worked on as an animator, all the way back in 1997 at Topix. Created with Softimage, rendered with Mental Ray and composited with After Effects.

Seafood

This spot involved a combination of both 3D animation as well as 2D warping, using Elastic Reality. The challenge was to animate a shark talking using previously shot stock footage. This was accomplished by using the same method as that in the movie “Babe”, in which the shark face was modeled with multiple mouth positions […]
